1. Sitar - Sitar is one of the most famous Indian musical
instrument used in India. This classical instrument has a long neck crafted
from teak wood. It has a resonator carved from a large seasoned gourd. The long
neck is complemented with twenty metal frets and seven main cords at the lower
end of the neck of the star. The frets are moved up or down to adjust the
frequencies or notes.
2. Veena – No South Indian
concert is complete without playing the magical instrument Veena. It has a
divine power to invoke spirituality and brings you close to god. The melodious
tunes produced by plucking the strings of the instrument is pure bliss. Veena

3. Harmonium – This is a popular
musical instrument used by the Ghazals and by classical singers. This is widely
played along by vocal artists while singing. The harmonium comes with a
keyboard of over two and a half octaves. The keyboard is played with the right
hand the bellows are operated with the left hand. Well, it is definitely an art
to effortlessly play the harmonium.
4. Tabla – This is a famous
musical instrument to complement any other musical instruments like Sitar,
Veena etc. Tabla is nothing but a pair of drums. The bayan is made of wood and
the top is covered with animal skin. The black spots on the top cover are the
ones which produce sound or beats. It is made of manganese or iron dust. The
bayan comes with a metal outer cover and the tuning of the table is made by
striking with a small hammer on the rim of the Tabla.
5. Dholak or Pakhawaj - This is the most common musical instrument
easily found in many Indian homes. It is believed that Dholak was derived from
Tabla. It is a barrel-shaped drum with two heads on opposite sides. The head is
made of animal skin and is expanded by leather straps. These straps run along
the sides of the cylindrical wooden block and are used for tuning the
instrument.
6. Sarod – This is another
incredible musical instrument which flaunts a small wooden body covered with
skin. The fingerboard is covered with steel and has 25 strings out of which 15
are sympathetic strings. A metal gourd acts as a resonator and the strings are
pulled with a triangular plectrum.
7. Mridangam – This is a wonderful magical instrument used to accompany vocal artists and instrumental artists.
Mridangam is a barrel headed drum made of a single block of wood. The two heads
on the sides are made of layers of animal skin. The right head is smaller than
the left head and played by tapping palms and fingers.

8. Shehnai – No Indian wedding
is complete without the melodious music of Shehnai. It is a must-play
instrument to signify auspicious rituals in temples and weddings. Shehnai comes with a tapering bore which
increases gradually towards the lower end. The finger holes are used to produce
semi, quarter and micro-tones. It is played by blowing wind in the instrumental
hole with lips.
9. Sarangi – This is one of the
oldest bowed musical instruments in India. Sarangi comes with 40 strings out of
which 37 are sympathetic. This instrument has a hollow body and is made of teak
wood decked with ivory inlays. It is held in a vertical position and is played
with a bow. Parallelly the strings are held in the left hand to produce music.
10. Santoor – This trapezoid
shaped musical instrument produces the sound of hills. It is made of walnut and
numerous strings. A lightweight hammer known as Mezrab is used to play Santoor.
The Mezrab or mallets are held between the index and middle fingers to play
Santoor.
